The Kenya National African Union (KANU) has asked opposition leader Raila Odinga to call off the planned swearing in ceremony on Tuesday next week.

According to the party’s Nakuru Branch Chairman John Muthee Ngunjiri, the move will only polarize the country.

Muthee was speaking to the press at the party’s offices in Nakuru on Wednesday.

“The constitution has laid down the procedure of electing a president and the swearing in process which ended on November 28 when President Uhuru Kenyatta and his deputy William Ruto took oath of office and therefore anything else would amount to treason,” he said.

Muthee said Odinga is a leader and a statesman, and disregard to the law would erode such status.

Meanwhile, Ngunjiri maintained that Kanu will support the candidature of its National Chairman, Gideon Moi, for presidency in 2022.

“As a party we will support the candidature of our national Chairman Gideon Moi for Presidency come 2022. We will be reaching out to like-minded partners to form a coalition at the expiry of the current term of parliament but  KANU is currently actively supporting development policies and agenda of the ruling Jubilee government,” he said
