Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Secretary General Wilson Sossion has been asked to resign from the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) Board for supporting the TSC/AON Minet Medical Scheme.
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) Nakuru Branch said Sossion should step aside if he continues supporting the scheme.
Speaking in Nakuru on Wednesday, the branch executive council led by executive secretary Gakau Mbugua, Chairman Sammy Kambo, Treasurer Rukwaro Theuri and vice chairman Samuel Ng’engo said that teachers would rather embrace the NHIF Medical Scheme.
“It is awkward for Sossion to support a company that competes with NHIF where he is a board trustee member,’’ said Mbugua.
They argued that it was possible for teachers to contribute to NHIF half of what they will surrender to AON Minet and still get a better cover.
“Teachers’ pay slips are already over committed hence they cannot afford two medical schemes,” added Ng’engo.
The officials pointed out that NHIF was a non-profit making institution while AON Minet Brokers Company has to make profit as well as the companies it acts on behalf of.
They added that AON Minet has not provided a list of hospitals from which teachers can get services yet they are sure that NHIF caters for medical expenses as far as India.
On this note, the teachers vowed to resist by all means the TSC / AON Minet medical scheme even if it means seeking court redress or industrial action.
