Operations at the Nakuru law court came to a standstill on Monday as lawyers demonstrated over the death of their Nairobi-based colleague.
Led by Rift Valley Chairman for the Lawyers Society Frank Mwangi, the lawyers condemned the killings of lawyer Willie Kimani, his client Josphat Mwenda and taxi driver Joseph Muiruri whose bodies were found at Ol Donyo Sabuk River last Friday.
They called for the immediate resignation of Inspector General of Police, Joseph Boinett for failing to protect Kenyans.
“We want to condemn the actions by the police force for the death of the three. We cannot be intimidated by the killings of our colleagues and we want the Inspector General to resign,” Mwangi said.
Elizabeth Mukira said it is a sad thing for the wives and children of the deceased since they have lost their breadwinners.
“The three wives have lost breadwinners and their loving husbands. Their children have been left orphans and this is what we are condemning with the strongest terms possible,” Mukira said.
Human rights lawyer, Gordon Ogolla also said he lost his client under similar circumstances and escaped narrowly after boarding another vehicle.
“In 2014, I was here with my client whom I asked to meet me at my office after representing him here. I headed to my office on my car while he was driving his, he was abducted along the way and killed. If we boarded the same vehicle I would not be alive today,” said Ogolla.
Mwangi said all cases slated for this week will be given other dates to allow the lawyers stand in solidarity with the families of the three.
The lawyers marched towards the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Nakuru Branch in conjuction with Human Rights Defenders Network which fosters good governance and democracy.
Three officers linked to the murder have been charged. They include Senior Sergent Fredrick Leliman, Corporal Stephen Chebulet and Constable Sylvia Wanjiku.
