Free Area Matatu Sacco will be the first public transport group in Nakuru County to introduce the cashless fare system that was touted by the government late last year. In an address to journalists on Monday at their offices, the Sacco’s s Manager John Wanjoike said the management board of the sacco had resolved to initiate the cashless fare system after undertaking wide consultations with members, travelers and stakeholders in the government. He had just come from attending a management and transport committee meeting where they agreed on the move. He announced that logistics to the initiative were at an advanced level before it kicks off from 1st February. According to Wanyoike, the cashless fare system has more advantages and disadvantages to the sacco owners and matatu owners as it reduces corruption in revenue collection and increases profits. He also observed that the system ensures sanity in the public transport sector. “We have done a thorough survey on the pros and cons of introducing the cashless fare system on our route. We want to tale members and commuters that this decision is meant well for them," he said. He stated that they are proud to be the first group in Nakuru to introduce the cashless system and was optimistic many others will copy their example after observing their gains. According to Wanyoike the Free Area Transport Sacco being purely a town service oriented public transport service provider would meet less difficulties as most of its customers are urban dwellers who will respond positively and flexibly to the new system.
