Members of Nakuru County Assembly have dissociated themselves from the county’s poor performance.
Addressing a press briefing at the county assembly on Wednesday morning led by majority leader Waithuke Njane, the MCAS said that their work is to approve development projects proposed by the county government and not telling the county government which project to start.
Reacting to a World Bank report which ranked counties on the amount of money being spent of development, Njane said that the failures of the executive should not be blamed on the county assembly.
“People are blaming the assembly for the low expenditure on development but what they do not know is that the assembly can only approve what the county executive proposes. Our work is to check on how money allocated for projects is being utilised but not to determine projects for the county government,” said Njane.
House minority leader, Daniel Ambale, said that the executive should take the blame for the low expenditure in development because they have failed to come up with policies which can spur development in the county.
“It is the work of the executive to draft development policies, our work is to approve them. We cannot approve what has not been presented to the house,” said Ambale.
The World Bank report released last week ranked Nakuru County among the lowest spenders on development with only15 percent of the total county allocation being channelled towards development projects.
