Nakuru MCAs have been accused of allowing corruption to take root within the county ranks by not boldly speaking against the vice.

Addressing the press in Nakuru town on Monday, county TNA chairperson Abdul Noor, who is also a rights activist, noted that civil societies have been forced to take over the mandate of leaders and the surest way of having their message reach the desired persons, was through peaceful demonstrations.

“Now that those who are supposed to keep an eye on the tax payer’s money are busy engaging in enriching themselves at the expense of our service,” he said.

Noor was part of the peaceful procession last week from Nyayo gardens to the county headquarters before presenting a petition letter seeking Governor Kinuthia Mbugua’s audience over alleged misappropriation of funds in the county.

He said that the Nakuru people accountability forum would not relent until the county’s electorate is told the truth on what is happening behind the scenes.

“Time comes when only the strongest will survive and as the voters, next time we don’t want to repeat the same mistake; let the innocent MCAs come out and join us in the process as the guilty ones await their day of reckoning,” Noor stated.

It is the responsibility of the assembly to play an oversight role and question all the expenditures but the county’s accounts department is on the spot after an auditor general’s report revealed alleged misappropriation, irregularities and over spending.

The civil society, pressure groups and other non-governmental organisations have vowed to spearhead the war against corruption in Nakuru by demanding for an account of all monies spent in the two past financial years.
