A section of Nakuru County assembly members have vowed to end leadership wrangles bedevilling the House to foster development.
The MCAs, led by embattled majority leader Maura Njenga, who spoke at a Nakuru hotel, said they were ready to discuss the supplementary budget in today’s sitting.
“We respect the deputy president’s calls to maintain peace. We will remain peaceful but we also urge our colleagues to respect us,” said Mwaura.
The more than 20 MCAs blamed speaker Susan Kihika for the wrangles in the assembly, saying she was 'dictatorial, partisan and exercising all forms of impunity in running the assembly'.
They also accused the speaker of engaging in unnecessary underground reshuffles of committee membership in the assembly and controlling finances, robbing off committees of their independence.
“Let the national government step in and investigate operations in the county assembly. There are so many irregularities taking place, including misuse of funds,” said Elburgon MCA Ms Florence Wambui.
The MCAs urged Ms Kihika to embrace equity in the house so as to enhance proper legislations that will benefit the people of Nakuru.
Recently, ousted deputy speaker Samuel Tonui, who was among the MCAs, also accused Ms Kihika of single-handedly managing the county assembly affairs without consulting even her deputy.
“I was sacrificed for instance for questioning the Sh1.2 billion allocated to the county assembly. I pointed out that the money was a lot for the assembly,” said Tonui.
Tonui regretted his ouster last week, saying standing orders in the house were being changed to suit a particular group.
Tonui also wondered why area leaders who are the torch bearers of the county, including Governor Kinuthia Mbugua, were silent on the matter.
On Tuesday, a fierce fight erupted in the assembly, as MCAs battled over who should be the majority leader, with one faction backing Speaker Susan Kihika’s endorsement of Samuel Waithuki, while the other insisted that ousted leader of majority George Mwaura should be reinstated.
In a new twist, deputy speaker Samuel Tonui was ousted after leading a section of the MCAs in challenging the leadership of Ms Kihika.
