A nominee for the position of ICT County Executive Committee member has vowed to revamp the controversial Sh200 million Nakuru Wi-Fi if appointed.

Raymond Kimutai Komen said he is determined to re-launch the free service to ensure it benefits the residents initially planned.

"I am not a Messiah but I strongly believe with charisma and drive coupled with passion I have in ICT I will ensure the Wi-Fi is up and running," said Komen, as quoted by the Nation.

The free Wi-Fi, known as BilaWaya, is still active in selected hotspots in Nakuru Town.

The project was initiated during the tenure of former Governor Kinuthia Mbugua.

It was a brainchild of the presidential digital team in collaboration with the county government.

However, there was a huge outcry from the locals who called it a 'white elephant' project that was meant to embezzle public funds.

"If I am given a chance I will approach service providers and other private-public partners to make sure the project is well distributed and the residents enjoy the fruit of free Wi-Fi," he said.

Komen, former Chief of Staff in the last administration, was speaking at the Nakuru County Assembly during his vetting on Monday.
