Scores of Nakuru motorists are against the proposed fuel levy by a roads agency.

The Kenya Roads Board has proposed an increase of 30 percent in fuel levy to help the national government raise more funds for road rehabilitation and constructions.

Speaking today at Nakuru Town, the motorists say that the increase would erode the gains that have been attained by falling fuel prices.

James Njau , a matatu operator says that the move would trigger off a crisis in the matatu industry.

“The move by the agency does not argue well because the matatu industry is still ailing in spite of reduction of fuel prices,” said Njau .

He said that the additional charges would be passed to passengers who would be unwilling to meet it.

For Stephen Mulei , a driver at Nakuru says that the move would complicate the matatu industry.

“The government should source funds from other areas, not by increasing fuel levy. This will cripple the industry because the additional charges will eat our low profits,” Mulei said.

The national government has been looking for additional funds to construct more road networks throughout the country but has fallen short of funds to execute the work.

However, the motorists have welcomed the government's efforts in road construction and maintenance, saying it would ease traffic congestion and reduce road carnage.
