A Nakuru based Non Governmental Organisation is set to start an elderly people’s programme in the county to boost social and economic status of people aged above 75. Education Supplements International (ESI) that works towards supporting disadvantaged children get better education and basic needs also runs other community based programmes that promotes social and economic wellbeing of marginalised people in society. Mr Raphael Mwangi, the Programmes Manager of the NGO on Thursday said the new social service charity programme targeting poor and neglected old people in the county would kick off in July this year. “This programme is not entirely part of our specialisations but rather it is a wider perspective of some of our sponsors’ objectives touching on philanthropy, poverty eradication, corporate volunteering and humanitarian aid. It is informed by the fact that social research shows majority of the elderly people in this region suffer from poverty and neglect,’’ he said. He added that logistics and material facilities to establish elderly people’s homes in several parts of Nakuru County were at an advanced stage. Education Supplements International runs several children orphanages in the county and supplies school materials and basic needs like food and health facilities to many other marginalised children. It get its funding from Global Hand a German based International humanitarian Non Profit making organisation.
