The county governments of Nakuru and Nyandarua have formed a joint taskforce to come up with terms and conditions on how to work together to improve cooperation.
In a joint meeting held on Tuesday at Olkalau between Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua and his Nyandarua counterpart Governor Daniel Waithaka Mwangi, it was agreed that the two counties should work jointly to revive the pyrethrum sector as well as commercialising potato farming for the benefit of residents of both counties.
Addressing the media after the meeting, Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua said his government has been collaborating with the government of Nyandarua in reviving the pyrethrum sector; a collaboration said has yielded fruits as most farmers who had abandoned pyrethrum farming have gone back to pyrethrum farming.
“The pyrethrum sector was one of the best paying sectors in the yesteryears but due to poor management and corruption the sector was brought to its knees. We have worked with Nyandarua since we came into office and we have managed to resuscitate the sector and soon we will put it back to its initial place," he said.
Mbugua noted that reviving the sector will help create more job opportunities and also reduce the levels of poverty among farmers.
On his part, Governor Waithaka said that his government was ready to work with Nakuru in ensuring that the potato and the pyrethrum sectors are fully revived and commercialised for the good of the farmers in the two counties.
“It will be easier for us to revive the pyrethrum sector if we work together and my government has reiterated that we will work with Nakuru in many aspects including conserving the environment, sharing of natural resources like water and making our agriculture sector more vibrant,” said Waithaka.
