Nakuru North OCPD Duncan Guthu has urged the judicial systems to impose heavier fines to those found dealing with illicit brews.
Guthu affirmed that the meager fines they are slapped with lead to their re-involvement in the same crime over and over again, therefore impeding the fight for illicit brews.
Speaking on Friday in his office, he urged that the judicial systems to work with the police in the fight against illegal brews.
“My officers have been working so hard to arrest those behind illegal brewing of chang’aa in the area. But it is sad to note that the courts have been very lenient while imposing fines or punishment, thereby encouraging these suspects to get in the same crime again,” he said.
He has now called for heavier penalties including imprisonment for longer sentences to ease in the fight against this vice that has claimed numerous lives over time.
Nakuru County has been hard hit by cases of illicit brews, therefore the need for the law enforcers and the courts to work together in fighting the vice.
“Fighting cases of illegal brews is hard. Bringing it to zero is even harder. It is therefore necessary for us to work together, my offices are on their ground to arrest all those involved in the same, so I would like to urge the judiciary to work with us on this,” he concluded.
