Parents in Nakuru County have supported a gazette notice by Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi to have the management of education institutions under his docket.
Kaimenyi said that he is on course publishing new set of rules that would give him powers to appoint and fire school heads, and principals of public institutions.
According to the parents, school heads have abused their positions by getting involved in unethical practices.
The parents argue that the head teachers have gone to extent of making schools their 'homes'.
Joseph Rono, a parent at Bondeni Primary School, Nakuru Town, said that some head teachers have misappropriated school funds for their personal gains.
“Majority of school heads run them inappropriately and time has come to tame them and make them be accountable for every cent used,” said Rono.
Jane Wacuka, a trader along Kanu Street, said that some heads have been fleecing them of their hard-earned cash.
“I always get scorched by sun at the open market only for the principal to add additional costs for the running of school and if I fail to meet the 'additional' cost my son is chased from school,” said Wacuka.
Peter Karanja, a hawker, said some heads are the wealthiest public servants due to corruption.
However the new rules have met sharp criticism from education unions; the officials of the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut), and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) say that no consultation was done with them when drafting the new rules.
More ever the Constitutional Implementation Constitution (CIC) has rejected the gazette notice arguing that TSC Acts spells out the details of management of education institutions.
