Nakuru residents have been given a 21-day notice to collect bodies of relatives from the Provincial General Hospital mortuary.

The county public health officer, Samuel King'ori says after the expiry of the time, the hospital will be forced to dispose of the bodies if they remain unclaimed.

Speaking on Wednesday when he toured the hospital, Kingo'ri said, “I have given families who have not collected dead bodies 21 days to do so. Failure to this, the county government will bury them in a mass grave," said reiterated.

He said that the hospital is incurring losses to the tune of millions by continuing to keep unclaimed bodies. He directed health officials to bury the unclaimed bodies after expiry of 21-day notice.

“I direct the hospital administration to bury unclaimed bodies if their families fail to honour the notice," he said.

King'ori revealed that the unclaimed bodies are limiting the hospital’s capacity.

“There are over unclaimed 45 bodies currently. This is seriously overstretching the facility," he added.

He said the hospital would replicate the model of Gilgil or Elburgon Hospitals where unclaimed bodies are buried in a mass grave.
