Nakuru Police Boss Bernard Kioko was yesterday asked to explain why the cases of extra judicial killings have increased in Nakuru county.
The National Police Service commission through the Lawyer David Mong'eri who is representing the law society of Kenya asked Mr. Kioko to explain to the commission why even after assembling a very special unit which its main aim and agenda was to try and tackle the rising crimes in the county there has been an increase in crimes and also the allegations that the unit has resulted in executing the suspects instead of arresting them.
Kioko was appearing yesterday before the National Police Service Commission vetting which is taking place in Nakuru town.
Kioko went ahead and told the Commission that the unit had no option apart from shooting and even killing the robbers who were heavily armed and had refused to surrender.
"We cannot put the life of our officers in danger. Any robber who is armed and had refused to surrender ends up being shot by the officers. At the moment we have been able to identify 20 most notorious gangs that have been terrorising the residents of Nakuru County.
We have their pictures which have been taken by our undercover police officers who were formerly part of the gangs and we have been using the pictures to identifying them", Kioko said.
The Chairman of the NPSC Johnstone Kavuludi went ahead and asked Mr Kioko to explain to the commission the issue that was surrounding the suspension of 4 CID officers who were allegedly accused of having stolen Ksh 400,000 from a businesswoman in Nakuru without an investigation conducted on them and Mr Kioko told the NPSC commission that he was acting under the strict directions of the Commandant.
"I was called by the CID commandant and he went ahead and directed me to immediately suspend the 4 officers pending investigations on their case", Kioko said.
