The area veterinary officer Samuel Mathenge said that most poultry farmers lacked the basic knowledge on how to raise chicken and ended up incurring many losses when disease attacked their birds.

"A large number of farmers don't know the symptoms of many diseases which end up killing a large number of birds within a short period of time," said Mathenge.

Mathenge was speaking to farmers in Kari estate in Naivasha. He said that infectious diseases like Basal, fowl pox and fowl typhoid were the common poultry diseases in the area. He further said that regular check ups by experts would ensure that the birds were healthy and that they continued to produce quality eggs.

He said that most farmers only sought their advice when things were out of control and nothing could be done to save the animals. Mathenge noted that chicken require a good feeding system and an effective waste disposal mechanism in order to maintain hygiene.
