The irate residents noted that many motorists ignored the zebra crossing since no one could take legal action against them in case of any accident or incident..

They argued that there have been increased cases of pedestrians being knocked on the crossings, but no legal action had ever been taken against them.

“There are many cases of hit and run on the zebra crossing, yet the law dictates that they should stop and allow people to cross to the other side. They have lost control of themselves and hence the increased cases of accidents in Pipeline area,” said Joyce Wangui, a pipeline resident.

Joan Njeri pointed out that CCTV cameras would also help in getting evidence in case there was a road accident on the crossing.

“The zebra crossing at Kiamunyi is also popular for accidents, but many have gone scot free due to lack of evidence against them. The insurance companies would also benefit from this video clips as they would know who was on the wrong,” she added.

They were speaking during a road safety awareness campaign at Nyayo gardens, where they called on the government to take strict measures to curb hit and run cases.

“The perpetrators need to be fined more. In fact they should be sentenced to life imprisonment. This is the only way we can stop such deaths,” said Godfrey Mwangi.
