Speaking to our reporter in his office n Saturday, Nakuru sub-county Veterinary Officer  Githui Kaba, said that some butchery owners and unlicenced meat sellers in the region were colluding with crooks to distribute illegal meat products for public consumption.

According to the veterinary services boss, many residents are ignorant about fake meat products hence vulnerable to consuming them a fact that could risk their health.

“Some people are colluding with donkey and game meat sellers to distribute them to butcheries for public consumption. I urge members of the public to be on the lookout and report to authorities for action against such people, said Githui.

He clarified that all meat products according to law, must undergo inspection before offered for consumption by the public but some local meat sellers were breaking that rule.

Kaba added that the county government public health committee would recommend for the passing of a bill by the county assembly that would make it difficult for illegal meat products to be distributed to members of the public.

He said, this would include heavy punishments for those found slaughtering donkeys and selling game meat within the county.

“We will ban them from selling meat anywhere in butcheries within the county or impose heavy fines for reclaiming licenses that have been suspended,” added Kaba.
