Electronics Manufacturer Royal Philips has introduced a range of innovative products developed specifically for semi-Urban and rural communities.
The innovations which include solar powered home lighting systems and a fan driven cook stove (J) were unveiled during stopover of philips 'Pan Kenyan ''maisha ni mwelekeo' roadshow in Nakuru.
The road show is traveling across the county, reaching out to communities and self help groups.
This project is aimed at educating target groups around clean cooking and the benefits of solar powered lighting solutions that create a safer and healthier home environment.
According to Mary Kuria General Manager, Philips Lighting East Africa, the world energy outlook 2012 indicates that a staggering 2.6 Billin people still depend on traditional cook stove or open fires for cooking and heating their homes.
‘‘Every week 75,000 people who are mostly women and children get sick or even die as a direct result of inhaling smoke and with this Philips stove it can reduce more than 90% compared to an open fire thus reducing health risks of indoor cooking,” said Kuria
The stove utilizes pellets, wood or other biomass for cooking.
As an expansion programme, Phillips is also introducing three models of solar lighting solutions for home use during the roadshow.
‘‘The key benefit of these lighting solutions is the safer and healthier environment created compared to the constant fire risk caused by the use of candles or kerosene lanterns,’’ said Kuria.
The 'Maisha Ni Mwelekeo'Roadshow’ Kicked off in Nairobi on October 6 and has made its way through Central, Upper Eastern, Lower Eastern and coastal Kenya already.
