Nakuru County leaders have been accused of using government bursaries to achieve political mileage.
Activists claim that leaders in the area are using the plight of needy students to popularize themselves politically.
“Why are these leaders behaving as if this is their money? This is government money and its disbursement should not be made to look like it is a favour,” Josephine Maina said.
Maina says that MPs, Governors and MCAs are all over the schools parading needy students when giving the bursaries. “You don’t have to parade students when releasing cheques to schools.
In fact, those cheques should be released direct to schools without the drama of trying to get publicity with them,” she added.
“It is true they are using bursaries as a political tool,” a headteacher of a day school in Nakuru said.
The leaders have splashed ‘bursaries awarding events’ on their social media accounts as they endear themselves to the voters.
“Why were they not doing this in 2014? They know were are headed to the ballot,” John Chege said.
