Scores of parents from Nakuru town today praised a charitable initiative by Equity Group Foundation and Master Card Foundation to support bright students from poor backgrounds.
The parents appreciated the sponsors saying that it will enable poor parents meet financial obligation of paying school fees.
“We are happy by the initiative’s move to help bright, but needy students because it will help many parents who are having problems in raising school fees”, said Beatrice Nyokabi, a cloth vendor.
Dennis Onyango, a tailor in Nakuru, also said that the initiative has come at the right time when many poor parents are struggling to raise school fees.
“I have a daughter who attained 394 marks and I will apply for the scholarship,” said Onyango.
“I have a problem in raising school fees for my son who attained 385marks in this year’s KCPE exams which was announced yesterday and the scholarship has come as a reprieve to me,” said Janet Wairimu, a single parent from the area.
The parents appealed for more organisations to come forward and support the poor parents in raising school fees.
The 'Wings to Fly ' programme is an initiative by Equity Group Foundation and the Master Card Foundation with support from USAID which provides platform for secondary school education to bright and poor students from needy backgrounds and marginalised areas.
The foundation intends to give Sh2,000 to bright and poor students from needy backgrounds who have attained 350 marks and above in 2014 KCPE.
