Nakuru town residents are now finding solace in a local cemeteries to protect themselves from scotching sun probably due to lack of enough recreational parks in the area.
A spot-check by this writer on Saturday afternoon showed that Nakuru South and North cemeteries were jammed with members of the public in search of ‘shelter’ and relaxation from hot climatic condition that is characterised with dust and heat.
Railways Estate resident John Nyaga who was found seating under a tree shade surrounded by several graves said he normally goes to relax at the scene during hot afternoons.
“My house does not have a ceiling board and I normally come here to relax when not on duty since this place is usually cool and silent,” claimed Nyaga.
Another resident Kennedy Ogamu, a newspaper vendor in the town said that he finds the cemeteries ideal for relaxation and taking records of the day’s sales. He added that the scotching sun becomes unbearable especially in the afternoons, a reason he says make most people seek for resting place in the cemeteries.
“I do not prefer sitting under trees along the road and that is why I always come to this place to relax my mind. I know it is kind of abnormal, to relax in a cemetery, but this place is okay with me,’’ said the newspaper vendor.
A youth group leader Antony Waweru however proposed that the county government should close old cemeteries and build new ones so that the old ones can be turned into alternative parks.
