This was said by a Nakuru based nutritionist Dr.Alice Kimei when he talked to this writer in an interview in her office on Monday at Nakuru Nursing Home.

Speaking to this writer in her Nakuru Nursing Home on Monday, Dr. Kimei observed that many nutritious natural plants that are edible were not being utilised due to ignorance.

She noted that many of these vegetables that sprout out in plenty during rainy seasons were being put to waste instead of being utilised as food.

“It is unfortunate that our people have not discovered a wide range of natural green vegetables that grow in plenty especially when it rains. These plants are highly nutritious because they help fight against diseases by enriching body immunity,” said Dr. Kimei.

She said that people should form the habit of exploring and discovering such vegetables to stay healthy.

According to nutritionist Kimei, many shrubs and weeds that grow naturally locally are indeed edible and were highly nutritious, but most of the Nakuru residents are not aware of that.

She at the same time appealed to the county government’s department of agriculture and health to roll out a civic education on nutrition and new crops to create awareness of the importance of embracing natural vegetables in diets and agribusiness to improve food security and health among residents of the county.

“What we know about green vegetables revolves around Sukuma Wiki and cabbage, kunde or black night shade but we uproot many important natural plants that can be of beneficial to our health and food security especially in this era of hard economic times,’’ observed Dr. Kimei.
