Residents of Teachers estate in Nakuru town were on Wednesday urged to embrace Nyumba Kumi security initiative in order to enhance security in the area. Teacher’s Estate Council of Elder in charge of security matters, Paul Ogega while addressing a public forum at Mariakani business centre observed that the Nyumba Kumi initiative had flourished in many areas where it had been embraced and urged local landlords and business operators to cooperate with local law enforcers in implementing the initiative. “We are encouraging landlords and also business people to forward the identities of their tenants and regular patrons to local law enforcers for records. We will be happy if residents cooperated in this initiative because it has succeeded in other parts of the country,’’ said Ogega. ” Being familiar with tenants and patrons and also people around you is important because no one from outside can come and terrorize you without having local links. Such loopholes must be sealed if we want to stay in a secure environment,’’ said Ogega. The area Sub-Chief, Chege Mwai on the other hand indicated that the government was steadfast in supporting Nyumba Kumi and challenged residents of the area to stop complaining about insecurity because they were adamantly abetting crime by failing to embrace Nyumba Kumi. ‘’This is a very simple thing to do. Simply register yourself and familiarize yourself with your neighbourhood. It will not harm you in any way but instead you will feel protected. If we don’t do that then we should stop complaining over insecurity because thieves live with us and it is up to us to identify them, “ said the Sub-Chief.
