Following Wednesday’s tragedy where toilets collapsed at Kisulisuli Primary school in Nakuru East injuring pupils, the county government of Nakuru department of public health has issued an evacuation notice to the management of the school until adequate sanitary facilities are provided.
The notice received by the school head teacher on Friday was issued following an inspection carried out by public health officers.
The notice dated May 4 2018 is stamped and signed by Gladys Mung’ou for Nakuru east sub county public health officer.
“…… following collapse of a pit latrine in the school on Wednesday, the lives of the school occupants is endangered..You are hereby directed to vacate pupils and staff to an alternative place until adequate sanitary facilities is provided….” Read part of the notice.
On Wednesday the school was closed down indefinitely by the CEC for Education Raymond Komen after which the county public health officer Samuel Kingori said an inspection of the sanitary facilities will be done in order to ensure conformity.
The exercise will also be extended to other schools.
Currently the school has ten pit Latrines six of which are used by girls while four are used by boys.
A public health officer, who requested anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the media, said that a recommendation has been done for the school to build 22 more latrines.
The school has a population of 678 pupils.
By the time we visited the school on Friday we found that learning was going on while the evacuation notice that was served to the school head teacher and a copy of it pinned at the main gate had been plucked off.
However, the head teacher as well as the county director of education Isaac Atebe denied having knowledge of the notice although a copy in our possession reveals that she actually received and stamped it.
