The Nakuru County government has embarked on a two-week census to register the number of people living with disabilities.
Speaking in Nakuru during the commencement of the census on Monday, nominated MCA Emma Mbugua, who represents Persons With Disabilities (PWD) in the assembly, appealed to all caregivers of PWD to register them during the exercise.
“I would like to urge all those with their family members living with disabilities to take advantage of this census in order to impact a change in society. I would also want to remind them that the days of hiding people with disabilities are long gone. The first step into helping them is to bring them to light,” she said.
The exercise which kicked off yesterday, targeting 11 sub-counties with an estimated 150,000 people in order to help them.
Nakuru County commissioner Mohamed Birik, who was also present, urged all community leaders, chiefs, Nyumba Kumi initiative chairmen, and assistant chiefs to partake in the exercise to ensure success of the same.
“The process will provide a spectrum of exact number of people living with disabilities to help the government in planning and budgeting of people living with disabilities in various areas including education and health among other needs," he said.
Nakuru health executive Dr Kabii Mungai, and his education counterpart Joseph Tonui were also present during the launch of this exercise.
