Nakuru county government has set aside Sh20 million to boost and encourage fish farming projects, county agricultural officer Purity Muritu has said.

Speaking at Lake Naivasha on Friday, Ms Muritu said the money will be allocated in the 2015-2016 financial year.

She said that the county government takes fish farming seriously and that the government is determined to boost the sector.

The officer noted the fish sector is among those earning high profits and promoting to the county’s economy growth.

“In order to encourage fish farming among residents and also boost the fish sector, the county government has allocated Sh20 million to fish farming,” she said.

Ms Muritu urged residents to take up fish farming indicating that it has good money.

She noted that the county government will be carrying out education programmes on fish farming.

At the same time, the official said that the county government had donated four boats to Lake Naivasha management to help deal with fish poaching.

Muritu said that fish poaching is a threat to the thriving sector, adding that the boats will be in handy for patrols.

“The Nakuru government has donated four boats that will be sued to patrol Lake Naivasha in a bid to curb fish poaching,” she said.

Statistics by the County Fishery Department shows that fishing revenue stand at Sh68.4 million last year with the figures expecting to rise this year.
