The money will be used in the purchase of water treatment chemicals to mitigate against any future outbreaks, said the county’s public health director Mr Samuel King’ori.

Addressing the media in his Nakuru office on Friday, King’ori said the money will also help in financing campaigns aimed at sensitising the public on the need for maintaining proper sanitary conditions.

King'ori said the recent cholera outbreak in some parts of the county has been an eye opener adding that appropriate preventive measures are being implemented.

“The Nakuru county government is determined to fight and curb sanitary related diseases. There are several programmes already running that will help curb the diseases,” he said.

King’ori said the county government has partnered with the national government to fight diseases like cholera and diarrhoea.

Other private organisations, he noted, are supporting the county to keep residents safe from cholera.

The Public health director urged Nakuru residents to exercise high levels of hygiene to curb the disease.

He said that though the situation has been contained, residents should keep high levels of cleanliness.

Cholera outbreak in Nakuru in April and May saw about 16 people lose their lives.

The outbreak was attributed to heavy rains that caused flooding with water sources getting contaminated.

Speaking at Njoro town on Thursday, Governor Kinuthia Mbugua ordered the immediate repair of drainage systems and collection of garbage from all markets and estates.

Poor drainage system and uncollected garbage have also been blamed for cholera outbreak in Nakuru and neighbouring counties.
