A visit at the market revealed a heap of garbage with flies and maggots has been lying uncollected since Friday last week.

It still unclear why the environment department has failed to collect the garbage that has previously been collected on a daily basis.

Traders expressed fear that they risk contracting sanitation related diseases like cholera that has so far claimed 17 lives in the entire county with a total of two hundred and seventy cholera cases have been reported in Nakuru since the end of April.

“We want Governor Kinuthia Mbugua to fire officers who have slept on their job putting the lives of members of the public at risk,” said Kamau Kibe, an operator at the market.

Presence of the garbage heap outside the market has also interfered with the flow of storm-water when it rains as well as the smooth flow of traffic

The county director of environment Muriithi Kiogora blamed the markets department since the department has a tractor allocated for that purpose.

He however said that the department which is under the trade and industrialisation docket does not have a budget for the same and as a result they were working on modalities to help them collect the garbage that is an eyesore at the moment.
