Traders at a market in Nakuru on Tuesday boycotted their businesses protesting the county government’s failure to collect garbage for the last five days.
The traders at Top Market accused the department of environment and public health of laxity for allowing the garbage to rot in the market resulting in a foul smell.
They said they fear Cholera outbreak in the market if the garbage, which is now stinking and has maggots, is not collected.
Cholera has so far claimed over 15 lives in Nakuru County.
Mr Stephen Kihara, a trader in the market, blames the county government for failing to procure enough transportation vehicles and workforce hence poor garbage collection.
“It is unfortunate that we are reporting cases of Cholera daily and the county has failed to collect garbage in our work station for four days. Some traders are complaining of headache, vomiting and diarrhoea,” he lamented.
“The garbage has obstructed car parking and water flow hence action must be taken immediately,” Mureithi said.
He called on governor Kinuthia Mbugua to crack the whip saying he is being cheated that the Central Business District is clean.
Ms Caren Ochieng, a fish trader in the market, accuses the county of only collecting monthly fees without delivering services.
“I have closed my business over this garbage which is producing a foul smell because I do not want to compromise my health. Our government has failed us,” Ms Ochieng said.
She said the county should employ more workers to collect garbage noting that currently there is no enough manpower in the department.
