The traders were angered by the notice claiming that it is the responsibility of the county government to construct latrines and not them.

The traders barricaded some roads paralysing transport for hours and vowed that they would not implement the directive.

“It is absurd for the Nakuru government to issue a notice asking us to construct toilets yet it is their responsibility to do so,” said Miriam Mukami, a trader.

Mukami said a notice signed by Kabatini public health officer last week directed traders to construct toilets at the market.

The traders accused the county government of neglecting its duties and passing them to the public.

The traders have since asked the county government to revoke the notice and take responsibility of constructing latrines at the market.

Kabatini public health officer Susan Karwenji confirmed issuing the notice.

She said the seven-day notice requiring traders to construct latrines will stand. The public health official warned that action will be taken against those who fail to comply.

Last week, traders complained over lack of latrines at markets in Nakuru, a move they claimed has led to their relieving themselves in public.
