Traders at Nakuru Main Market have threatened to boycott paying county levy fees, due to the poor state of the market.
They cited that the market was now dirty and full of mud following the onset of the rainy season, and want the situation improved.
They expressed fears that there would be a cholera outbreak, especially since the toilets they are using were dirty and inadequate.
“We do not have enough toilets, and this forces us to look for alternatives. The ones that we have are also full and blocked and hence affects us. Even the smell coming from the toilets is keeping our customers away,” said Janet Muthoni, a trader.
The traders also pointed out that the mud in the market was pushing the customers away.
“Our goods are not spared by the mud, and our customers are getting stuck whenever they come to buy. This is greatly affecting our sales and the county is doing nothing about it,” said Sarah Chari.
They now want the county government to cement the market floor and clean it at on a daily basis.
“We need them to put up proper structures instead of coming up with short term solutions any time it rains. This is a problem that should be solved once and for all,” she cited.
