A 25-year-old woman in Makao Estate in Nakuru town was today (Thursday) morning rushed to hospital in a critical condition after she attempted to commit suicide by consuming poison following a dowry payment dispute pitying her husband and parents.
The husband of the young woman Peter Wafula who is a Nakuru based lorry driver said, in an interview at St. Antony Hospital where his wife Beatrice Nyambura also a mother of one was admitted, that his wife tried to commit suicide by consuming a liquid she prepared by crushing an old mobile phone battery.
According to the husband, his wife was protesting her parent’s decision to separate the two after he failed to honour a promise to pay dowry sometime this year.
“My wife has been stressed up following pressure from her parents for her to separate from me. We have been living peacefully but things changed after I failed to honour a promise to pay dowry urgently as required by her parents,’’ said Wafula adding that her wife was recovering at the hospital where she is admitted.
A neighbour of the couple Florence Mukami said the young woman had been contemplating committing suicide for the last two weeks after her mother visited the couple’s house and demanded that she goes back home.
“She has been telling me about her predicament and swearing to do something bad. She has also been drinking heavily while her husband is away at work urging that she could never face life without her husband,’’ said Mukami adding that she phoned her husband after she discovered the suicide attempt victim lying unconsciously on a sofa set in the couples house’s living room.
