A candidate for the Nakuru town West parliamentary seat Sospeter Nyakundi Tomato has asked women in the country to go for competitive politics and stop hiding behind the nomination process.
Speaking in Kisii town, Tomato who is also the Nakuru county ODM organising secretary said that if well organised, the population of women was higher than that of men and they are the ones who participate in elections most and therefore, they should elect one of their own.
He said that requirements that certain political parties rewarded their supporters through the nomination slots are a burden to the taxpayers because there are no returns afterwards.
At the same time, Tomato said that introducing two candidates per electoral area to suit the gender rule will be horrible because politician will introduce their running mates and deny the physically challenged and marginalised groups their right of representation as enshrined in the constitution.
He said that if the system is allowed, men will gang up with their girl friends to scoop all the seats and the minority clans and groups will not get their chance to be elected and will be ruled by the majority clans forever.
Tomato said that the constitution should reduce the two thirds gender rule and look for a wise solution because that is like creating employment at the expense of competitive politics.
