Addressing media in Nakuru after holding a 2 hours procession to mark the day, the women through a statement read by Lillian Omondi called on both the National and County Governments to ensure that women are included equally in leadership.
“As women aspirants in Nakuru we would like to call on the Government to ensure inclusivity of women in leadership and political parties to ensure free and fair nominations,” she said.
On matters of devolution and the achievements as far as women are concerned, Gladys Kamuren who is contesting Nakuru Women Representative seat on Jubilee ticket noted that at least there is something women can smile about.
She was, however, quick to note that there was more to be done in empowering women and ensuring that they also participate in the leadership.
“Devolution has achieved in terms of women empowerment but we still have more to be done. Some of those women we elected some have failed us but we are challenging those who will be elected in coming polls to ensure they represent well issues of women,” said Kamuren.
Her sentiments were echoed by Jackline Chebet an MCA aspirant for London Ward in Nakuru West who called on the society to support women leadership.
According to Chebet, Women can deliver if given chance through the forthcoming August General elections.
“As women, we have not achieved a lot but given a chance I know we can deliver. I, therefore, call upon all women to ensure that we support each in the coming polls,” she said.
The International Women's Day marks the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women.
