Governor Kinuthia Mbugua has called on youths in the county to reconsider taking up courses so as to acquire life skills as a substitute to white collar jobs that have become elusive over the years .
Speaking at the Nakuru polytechnic on Wednesday after officially commissioning the refurbishment of the institution, the governor regretted the fact that many young people ignored technical institutes at the expense of universities, a trend he believes is the cause of the unemployment problem.
He gave an example of young graduates who had resorted to crime due to idleness.
"Our youths are suffering because of lack of knowledge, who told them that going to a polytechnic or a technical institute makes them less competitive in the job market?" he posed.
"Time has come for us to join hands as stakeholders and make them change this misinformed perception because we want them to become independent and self reliant in future," he added.
He further vowed to double the county government technical institutes bursary allocation in the next financial year so as to enable bright students from poor backgrounds attain post secondary education.
He said the County Government of Nakuru has spent Sh130 million during the first and second financial year on development and expansion of polytechnics.
