Young women in Nakuru County have developed a tendency of using the emergency pills to avoid getting pregnant.
Teresia Wairimu, an official from Ministry of Health said that most youths are risking their lives by opting for pills other than using protection.
"It is shocking to learn that most youth do not protect themselves and instead opt for pills, which when used regularly may have a negative impact on their reproduction system," said Wairimu.
She said that despite the public hospitals offering free condoms to the public, most youths still engaged in unprotected sex.
“The hospitals usually dispatch free condoms from the dispensers for public use but I am saddened to say their usage is almost zero," she said.
She urged the youths to always make an effort of contacting experienced medical personnel on the appropriate contraceptives for use rather than opting for emergency pills.
John Mwaura, a pharmacist in Nakuru town, confirmed that it was indeed true there was rise in emergency pills usage among the youths.
“Emergency pills sale usually supersede those of condoms especially over the weekend,” said Mwaura.
