The Beyond Zero mobile clinic issued by First Lady Margaret Kenyatta to Nakuru County has served more than 1,000 women since its inception a month ago. Nakuru Chief Officer of Health Kabii Mungai said the mobile clinic was in Rongai area the whole of last week. “We have a satellite map where we look into the areas that were most affected by the lack of a clinic. It is here where we set camp and treat the residents of any disease including normal flu, HIV testing and counselling and pre and postal natal care,” he said. In a telephone interview on Thursday, Kabii said that the ambulance could only benefit people in the rural areas and not in the suburbs. “It would not make any sense if the clinic is used in areas which can access clinics,” he noted. Kabii was reacting to claims by women that the clinic was inaccessible and was not serving its purpose. Kabii said they would launch eight ambulances which will be located in every town centre so as to respond to emergencies. “We would like every person to be within reach of a health centre and a doctor,” he said. Jane Njeri, who lost her child, lamented that they had been trying to reach the Beyond Zero mobile clinic but their calls to health officials went unanswered. “I lost my child because of negligence and arrogance of health experts,” she said.
