Nandi county Governor Stephen Sang' recently claimed ownership of the border towns of Muhoroni, Chemelil, Miwani and Kibigori, which currently fall under Kisumu county, claiming that the thousands of hectares of land under which they stand belong to his county.

The county has since embarked on a proposal laying claim to the sugar belt zone, calling for a boundary review, a move that has been opposed by leaders from the other side.

Nandi county lawyer George Tarus has reiterated Sang's claims, citing boundary lines drawn in the colonial era.

''Thousands of hectares of land and four key towns among them Chemelil, Muhoroni, Kibigori and Miwani are in Kisumu County but according to the original boundaries, which the colonial government drew,  these towns belonged to Nandi County,'' he was quoted by the Daily Nation.

In response, Muhoroni lawmaker Onyango K'oyoo has called for a keen probe into the Governor's demand, terming it as insincere and malicious.

A similar position has been taken by his Kisumu East counterpart Shakeel Shabbir, who has cautioned that the situation could provoke more border rows nationally.

On his side, Kisumu Governor Anyang' Nyong'o has promised to cooperate with the relevant bodies in line with solving the puzzle.

''The top leadership of Kisumu County will give a response should there be service of such a petition. The boundary delimitation exercise by the IEBC is about to commence and we shall be engaging them as per the dictates of the constitution with regard to this exercise,'' the county chief was quoted by the paper.
