A man escaped the wrath of mob justice after he was spotted trying to steal a donkey from a homestead in Bahati on Wednesday night. Residents said the suspected thief was trying to drive the animal from Aineah Wainaina’s compound for slaughter. Wainaina and his wife however raised an alarm and the suspect ran for his life after neighbours responded promptly. Philip Maina, a resident, said he woke up and armed himself after his neigbour raised an alarm saying someone was trying to steal his donkey. He said more neibhours gathered at Wainaina’s compound ready to face the thief but he could not be traced. “We were all armed and ready to act, but the thief had managed to get away,” he said. Wainaina, a subsistence farmer, uses the animal for farm errands. He said he sensed something was wrong after his wife woke him up following unusual commotion from outside his compound. “When he opened a widow to peep outside, he saw a man prodding the donkey with a long stick. It was then that he raised an alarm but the suspected thief took to his heels,” said Maina. Maina said residents have formed a community policing group to enhance security in the village and respond to distress calls from villagers. Cases of donkeys being stolen and slaughtered for meat are common in Naivasha.
