President Uhuru Kenyatta during his maiden trip to Somalia in March 2017. [Photo:@DhanaanMedia]The National Super Alliance (Nasa) on Friday released a statement, reiterating that President Uhuru Kenyatta plans to rig elections.Through secretary generals of its affiliate parties, Nasa listed areas where Jubilee administration would allegedly deploy KDF troops to suppress its supporters, preventing them from voting for Nasa.Below is the statement."On at least three different occasions in recent days including yesterday, the National Super Alliance has spoken of plans by the Jubilee administration to use security personnel to rig elections in its favour. While these revelations, including yesterday when Presidential Candidate Raila Odinga tabled names of police officers who have been deployed on supposed “special mission” have been dismissed by Jubilee merely as alarmist, NASA wishes to reiterate that we are acting in the interest of and for the love of the nation. In this regard, we wish to draw the attention of the country to the fact that in addition to using the police, the Jubilee administration has plans to deploy military in parts of the country particularly in the counties of Kisii, Migori, Homa Bay, Kisumu, Kakamega and Bungoma in the run up to and after elections. The intention is to terrorize Kenyans into voting for Jubilee or suppressing NASA supporters to stay at home and not vote.We have in our possession details of preparations of troops from the Lanet and Gilgil Units to be unleashed on civilians in Kisii, Migori, and Homa Bay, while the units from Nakuru are to be deployed in Kisumu, Siaya, Kakamega and Bungoma. The deployment of a country’s military troops by a president against a civilian population has no place in a democracy. The Laws of Kenya are clear on what the military can and cannot do and the circumstances under which the President can deploy the military. He must seek the approval of Parliament. That has not happened. We are therefore appalled that the Jubilee administration is proceeding with plans to deploy the military internally without themandatory authorization. The plan, if it comes to pass, will have the undesirable effect of dividing our military along ethnic lines with regrettable consequences for our country. The net effect will be the collapse that has followed such unfortunate adventures in other Third World countries.Uhuru must not visit such a curse on our country. We challenge President Kenyatta to come clean on this matter. He must equally assure Kenyans that he not only still believes in the Constitution, but will not act to subvert it by deploying the military on civilians internally merely to stay in power. And if he needs to deploy the military internally for legitimate reasons, he will seek permission from Parliament.Uhuru must rise beyond his pride and rhetoric of talking peace while preparing for war.Signed1.
