In a twitter statement Thursday, the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga-led side took jabs at the head of state for drumming up support for the game, usually associated with the well-off, at the expense of the students and pupils' well being.

According to the alliance, Uhuru's leadership should consider upgrading and improving the condition of the learning institutions, some of which it claimed are in deplorable condition, before making such introductions.

''To despot Uhuru Kenyatta, 'playing golf' is of far greater importance than providing a decent learning environment and skilled, well-remunerated teachers for our children,'' the alliance wrote.

The President made the remarks on Tuesday, when he presented the Kenyan flag to the national boys and girls golf team at  State House, Nairobi.

The team is headed to Casablanca in Morocco for the Africa Junior Golf Challenge.
