Mombasa leaders have vowed to hold their planned rally in Mombasa on Sunday although police have outlawed the same.Mvita MP Abdulswamad Nassir said on Friday Kenyans, constitutionally, have the right to picket peacefully, associate and assemble.He said all anti-IEBC demonstrations held recently in Mombasa County have been peaceful and no incidents of law-breaking have been reported.“[Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred] Matiang’i should know that Kenya is governed by the Constitution which gives Kenyans the right to assemble. Associate and demonstrate. We will go on with the protests as well as the Sunday rally,” the lawmaker said.Matiang’i has banned all demonstrations within the Central Business District of major towns in NASA’s strongholds including Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu.While addressing the press from Harambee House on Thursday, Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said government will not condone demonstrations within the Nairobi CBD, Kisumu and Mombasa. He said political gatherings will also not be allowed.Matiangi’s directive comes hot on the heels of another countrywide planned demonstration by the Opposition NASA to oust the electoral commission officers who allegedly bungled the August 8 presidential polls.TheCS stated that it is the responsibility of the organisers to ensure demonstrations are peaceful.He further instructed anyone whose property was destroyed to report to police to facilitate the prosecution of NASA Executive Director Norman Magaya following Wednesday’s looting and destruction of property during the coalition’s protests.
