A Member of Parliament was on Thursday arraigned before a Mombasa Court to answer to charges of robbery with violence and damage to property.

Matuga MP and Amani National Congress (ANC) Deputy Party leader Kassim Ali Sawa was being accused of allegedly stealing goods worth Sh850,000 from a businessman.

The court heard that the MP jointly with others not before the court stole a freezer, refrigerator, 35 plastic chairs and counter table.

The MP also made away with 20 cooking oil jerricans, 20 bundles of wheat flour, computer, television set, welding toolbox, a phone and a locker, all valued at Sh850,000.

Mr Kassim was also being accused of willfully and unlawfully destroying property belonging to Mr Riziq Fundi Bakari worth Sh1 million.

Mombasa Senior Principal Magistrate Francis Kyambia heard that the accused committed the offence at Bamburi on October 17, 2009.

The businessman had opened a restaurant after the Matuga MP leased the plot to him in 2006.

The MP, however did not plea to the charges since the chief magistrate assigned the case, Julius Nang'ea was absent.

The case will be heard on June 21, 2018 for plea taking.
