Laikipia North MP Mathew Lempurkel has been released.
Lempurkel was on Monday freed from custody after spending four days in police cells over claims of hate speech. The MP was charged before a Kibera court where he however did not plead to the charges of racial contempt as well as inciting Samburu to cause violence against ranchers of European descent.
This was after the prosecution requested for more time to get their instructions from DPP Keriako Tobiko.
Although the prosecution requested that the MP be detained for longer to conclude investigations, Kibera Chief Magistrate Joyce Gandani declined the request and released the legislator on a Sh100 000 cash bail.
She said the prosecution had been given enough time and that they had no justification to keep detaining the lawmaker since this would be against his rights.
