Mavoko MP Patrick Makau has warned Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet and acting Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiang’i over police brutality.Makau said Boinnet and Matiang’i will be held responsible for the alleged brutal actions of the police against NASA supporters on Friday.Speaking to journalists in Mavoko Town on Saturday, the Wiper lawmaker said police were contravening the law by using excessive force. He said opposition leaders will not sit back and watch as the government allegedly uses the police to harass and intimidate innocent Kenyans. The MP said police officers had no right to deny NASA leaders and their supporters access to Uhuru Park when NASA leader Raila Odinga jetted back in the country from the US on Friday.Makau said Kenyans have a right to assemble anywhere in the country as long as they notify the police and the relevant authorities.“Boinnet ad Matiang’i should know that this country is not a banana republic and must stop using the police to brutalise innocent citizens,” said Makau. He said NASA had booked Uhuru Park for Raila’s grand rally on Friday only for the police to seal it off.The MP accused top police officers of working with the government to curtail the freedoms and rights of Kenyans. He said the opposition will seek ways of ensuring justice is served to the deceased and those who sustained injuries during Friday’s chaos in Nairobi. The police have however defended themselves, arguing that they used minimum force to disperse the NASA supporters.Five people died and property worth millions destroyed during the chaos.
