The National Super Alliance (NASA) Technical Committee has reportedly agreed that Raila Odinga will be the Opposition’s presidential candidate.
Wiper party leader Kalonzo has been proposed as the ODM leader’s running mate.
The four NASA co-principals – Raila, Kalonzo, Musalia Mudavadi and Moses Wetangula - have scheduled a meeting to take place this afternoon to reach a final decision.
The Opposition leaders are this morning expected to meet the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chiefs.
NASA’s National Coordinating Committee (NCC) made its decision on Tuesday, according to The Star.
“We are now done. We sat until 12am on Tuesday. But we are happy about our report,” a member of the Committee who sought anonymity, was quoted by The Star.
The committee is also said to have proposed the creation of a Chief Minister post, which is equivalent to the Prime Minister position.
Amani National Congress (ANC) leader Mudavadi, who first registered NASA at the Registrar of Political Parties, has been proposed to occupy the Chief Minister post.
Ford Kenya leader Wetangula will occupy the position of the Speaker of the National Assembly.
Speaking on Citizen TV on Wednesday evening, Kalonzo said NASA will announce its flag bearer by the end of April.
He also confirmed he will not walk out of the coalition in case he is not named the presidential candidate.
His remarks came even as the 7-day ultimatum given by National Assembly Minority Leader Francis Nyenze expired Tuesday midnight.
Nyenze said ODM must honour the 2013 MoU Raila signed with Kalonzo and name the Wiper leader as NASA flag bearer, or they walk out of the coalition.
“Nothing has changed, our position is the same, that if it’s not Kalonzo, then there is no NASA. That is the position of the Kamba nation,” Nyenze told the Star on Wednesday.
