NASA principals Kalonzo Musyoka, Moses Wetang'ula, Isaac Rutto, Musalia Mudavadi and Raila Odinga when they announced their presidential flag bearer at Uhuru Park, April 27, 2017. Two of the five are likely to dump Nasa before 2022. [the-star.co.ke]It is often said in politics that there are no permanent friends or enemies. This say perhaps doesn't make sense elsewhere like it makes in Kenya's political scene where alliances and political alignments takes shape in every electoral cycle and disintegrate thereafter.Currently, owing to the just concluded General election, majority of the politicians are either aligned to Jubilee or Nasa. This includes even those who were elected on independent tickets who can be said to be Jubilee or Nasa independents. And in a country like ours where we are always in a campaign mode, it is not early to even start imagining how the 2022 political landscape will look like. This is because President Uhuru Kenyatta will be hanging his political boots and Nasa co-principal Raila Odinga may not offer himself again for another presidential contest after losing four times. Let's focus on the last point. What is the future of Nasa whether Raila will be in the picture or not come 2022? The answer is simple and precise. Just like its predecessor Cord, Nasa may have entered its death bed after Raila lost the presidential contest on August 8.Actually, two of the five Nasa co-principals may just be counting months, perhaps some few years, before they bolt out of Nasa for 'greener and juicy pastures'.One of them is certainly Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka. Kalonzo who has never been outside government in his entire political career before 2013 General election, isn't ready to play 'pata-potea' games with Raila again. As times goes by, Kalonzo is likely to align himself with another political movement that will guarantee him political 'warmth' as he enters old age. Remember his Ukambani support base is already revolting against him, if Wiper's performance in 2017 General election in the region is anything to go by. So, his options will really be limited and his bargaining power really reduced. The other Nasa co-principal who has much lesser options than Kalonzo is former Bomet Governor Isaac Rutto. The humiliating defeat he received in his home turf may have reminded him that he has to shape up or be shipped out. Before 2022, Rutto will, therefore, be looking for ways to get out of the 'political Siberia' that Nasa has 'dumped' him for the next five years.
