The Nation Media Group (NMG) has apologised following a death and funeral publication on Wednesday, February 7, 2018.
The publication announcement bearing a photo of NASA coalition financier Jimi Wanjigi, caused an uproar on social media, with Kenyans wondering why NMG could publish an obituary of someone who was not dead.
Through Daily Nation Newspaper, NMG used similar names and description of the tycoon but referred to him as James Richard Wanjagi instead of 'Wanjigi'.
It included names similar to those of Wanjigi's family members, residence and even described his business as Kwacha ‘Industries’ instead of Kwacha Group.
Although it was published on Wednesday, the announcement indicated that he was to be buried on Tuesday, February 6 at Nairobi's Lang’ata Cemetery.
It said Wanjagi died following a failed robbery attempt at his Karen home. There was such an attempt at the home of James Maina Wanjigi’s (Jimmy Wanjigi’s father) Karen home but nobody died.
NMG issued an apology statement, partly saying: "Nation Media Group does not condone such publication, which goes against our editorial policy. We have taken immediate action against those responsible for the placement of the announcement, including reporting the matter to the police for further investigations.
"Below is the full apology statement.
