NAWASCO MD James Nga’ng’a maintains his decision not to waive water bills for public primary school teachers despite their pleas.
Ng’ang’a cited the pre-existing subsidy the schools receives as the main reason. Speaking to the press in Nakuru, the managing director stated the move would be crippling to the water company.
He insists many schools in the county have normal water supply as they have cleared the debts owed to the water company. “We deliver to them clean water at Ksh40 per cubic meter whereas the normal rate stands at Ksh48. If we waive the bills we will not get any money to run the company,” he added.
Ng’ang’a continued by saying that the schools which were disconnected had not fulfilled their water payment plan as agreed by the company and the schools. He stated that schools were given a 36 months period to clear their water bills against a 3 month period enjoyed by normal domestic consumers.
“Three years is enough time for them to clear the bill and hence get their water well supplied,” he concluded. Nga’ng’a pointed out that the company was looking into ways to ensure that a majority of the schools had a long term plan for water delivery.
